The Honourable Tim Uppal
Minister of State (Democratic Reform)
Tim Uppal was first elected to the House of Commons in 2008 and re-elected in 2011 as the Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Sherwood Park.
Prior to being appointed as a Minister of State (Democratic Reform), Mr. Uppal was a member of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration and served as Acting Chair of the Standing Committee on Health. In December 2010, his private member's bill, An Act to Establish a National Holocaust Monument, was passed through the House of Commons with unanimous all-party support.
Mr. Uppal was born in British Columbia in 1974 and has spent most of his life in Edmonton. Prior to his election, Mr. Uppal was a residential mortgage manager with TD Canada Trust. For over a decade he has mentored youth-at-risk through sport. He has coached soccer and wrestling (kabaddi), and was involved in the World Masters Games held in Edmonton. For many years, Mr. Uppal also hosted a community radio show on CKER FM in Edmonton.
Mr. Uppal's long history of community involvement was recognized when he was named The Outstanding Young Edmontonian for 2005 by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and when he was awarded an Alberta Centennial Medallion from the Government of Alberta.
Tim and his wife Kiran, a Department of Justice lawyer, are enjoying the gift and responsibilities of raising their 3 year old daughter Kirpa, and baby son Nihal.
