Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today the appointment of Mr. Stephen Wallace as Secretary to the Governor General of Canada, effective February 1, 2011.
Mr. Wallace brings a wealth of experience to the role having held increasingly senior positions in the federal public service. Most recently he was Associate Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage. Prior to that, he held various positions at the Treasury Board Secretariat and the Canadian International Development Agency, including Vice-President of the Afghanistan Task Force.
The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to thank outgoing Secretary to the Governor General Sheila-Marie Cook for her outstanding service as Secretary to the Governor General and acknowledged the considerable contribution she has made in the position. The Prime Minister wished her the very best in her future endeavours.
