“Canada continues to play a leading role on the world stage – from improving the health of women and children in developing countries, to assisting the Libyan people in their transition to democracy, to demonstrating fiscal leadership and strong fundamentals in tough economic times,” said Prime Minister Harper. “I look forward to working with our international partners in New York so we can continue to generate concrete results on these important issues.”
The High-level Meeting on Libya will bring together representatives from countries and international organizations determined to help Libya rebuild and transition to a democratic society. The Conference will also include senior members of Libya’s National Transitional Council.
Prime Minister Harper will then participate in the Every Woman Every Child event hosted by the UN Secretary-General. The high-level panel, which is made up of heads of government and senior officials from civil society and the private sector, will focus on results achieved to date and the next key steps to implement the stakeholders’ commitments.
While in New York, the Prime Minister will also join stakeholders and senior business leaders from Canadian and global companies for a business roundtable hosted by the New York Stock Exchange. This will focus on the current economic climate and the importance of close Canada-U.S. business relations.
