PM attends High-level Meeting on Libya

Canada ready to participate in UN mandated effort to bring peace, stability and economic recovery to Libya

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today participated in a High-level Meeting on Libya where he announced that Canada stands ready to support the new Libyan government through the UN-coordinated effort moving forward.

“Canada has been at the forefront of international efforts to protect civilians in Libya against the oppressive Gaddafi regime and provide them with humanitarian assistance,” said the Prime Minister. “Canada will continue to support the people of Libya, standing ready to promote effective governance and institutions, a secure environment founded on the rule of law, economic development and prosperity, and respect for human rights.”

Since the onset of the crisis in Libya, Canada has taken decisive diplomatic, humanitarian and military action to protect and help the people ofLibyaand to encourage a transition to a representative democracy.Canada is now prepared to support stabilization and reconstruction in a post-Gaddafi era by supporting the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

The High-level Meeting on Libya was hosted by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and included representatives from countries and international organizations who are committed to helping Libya rebuild and transition to a democratic society.
