PM announces new projects to save the lives of mothers and children in developing countries

Canada continues to fulfill commitments made under the Muskoka Initiative

New York City, New York
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced support for 28 new projects that will help save the lives of mothers, infants and children in Haiti, Africa and Asia. The projects fulfill part of Canada’s commitments under the Muskoka Initiative, which it championed at last year’s G-8 Leaders Summit.

“At last year’s Summit, G-8 leaders agreed to take action to put a stop to the thousands of mothers dying during pregnancy and childbirth and the millions of children who die before their fifth birthday,” said the Prime Minister.  “I am proud to say that with today’s announcement, Canada has now launched 51 Muskoka Initiative projects in 26 countries that are helping to reduce preventable deaths.”

These projects are the culmination of a call for maternal, newborn and child development project proposals initiated as part of Canada’s contribution to the 2010 G-8 Muskoka Initaitive. Recipients – which include various Canadian development organizations and agencies – were selected based on the effectiveness and sustainability of their submissions.

These projects will help strengthen the delivery of health care services, improve access to nutritious foods, and address prevalent diseases and illnesses that cause maternal, neonatal and child deaths.
