PM supports Canadian sealers

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today met with Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Minister for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Pujjuut Kusugak, Mayor of Rankin Inlet, on Parliament Hill to show support for Canada’s sealing industry and promote it as a producer of healthy, safe and sustainable natural resource products.

“Our Government is firmly committed to defending the legitimate economic activities of Canadians,” said Prime Minister Harper. “Canada’s sealing industry sustains thousands of Northern and East Coast jobs and the traditional way of life of a number of Aboriginal groups in our country.  Our Government will continue to vigorously defend this humane and highly regulated industry and to seek new international markets for Canadian seal products, including China.”

Seal pins were provided today to all Members of Parliament and Senators by the Government of Nunavut and the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association to wear as a symbol of support for Canada’s sustainable seal harvest.
