PM attends unveiling of new Canadian portrait of The Queen and announces Canada's contribution to the Diamond Jubilee Trust
“This beautiful new piece of Canadian art was created to mark the historic occasion of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,” said Prime Minister Harper. “This tribute honours Her Majesty’s extraordinary 60-year reign as our Head of State and is part of a Canadian tradition of artwork reflecting our culture and heritage.”
The portrait, which was unveiled by Her Majesty, is the third one commissioned by the Government of Canada during Her Majesty’s reign. The unveiling was witnessed by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Mr. Gordon Campbell, Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and Mr. Phil Richards, the Canadian artist who painted the portrait. The painting will be displayed at Canada House in London from June 8-14, 2012. It will subsequently return to Canada to be installed at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
During the visit to London, the Prime Minister also announced Canada’s contribution to The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.
“During these special Diamond Jubilee celebrations, I am also pleased to announce Canada’s contribution to the Diamond Jubilee Trust,” said Prime Minister Harper. “The Trust is an excellent way to honour Her Majesty’s record of service, while supporting a variety of charitable initiatives that will enrich the lives of citizens in Canada and throughout the Commonwealth.”
Established to commemorate The Queen’s 60-year reign, the Diamond Jubilee Trust will be funded by governments, individuals, organizations and the private sector, and will invest in projects that seek to make a real and enduring difference in people’s lives throughout the Commonwealth. Canada’s representative to the Diamond Jubilee Trust is the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien.
