Governor General to attend Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Summer Games
“The London 2012 Olympic Games bring together athletes from around the world in a common pursuit of sport excellence”, said Prime Minister Harper. “Our Olympians have provided us with some of the most exciting moments in Canadian sporting history. I look forward to watching our national Olympic team shine this summer, and commend them on their commitment, determination and spirit.”
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting our athletes from the playground to the podium and is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada. Through initiatives such as the Athlete Assistance Program (AAP), the Government provides more than $27 million a year in direct funding to Canada's international calibre athletes.
The London 2012 Olympic Games will take place from July 27 to August 12, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 29 to September 9.
