“Germany is an important friend to Canada and a valued ally and partner in organizations like the G-8, G-20, and NATO,” said Prime Minister Harper. “As Canada and the European Union work to conclude free trade negotiations, I look forward to a wide-ranging discussion with Chancellor Merkel on the challenges facing the global economy.”
This will be Chancellor Merkel’s first bilateral visit to Canada. The visit will provide an opportunity for both leaders to discuss matters of shared interest, including trade and investment, peace and security matters and recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa. Chancellor Merkel was last in Canada to attend the June 2010 G-8 Muskoka and G-20 Toronto Summits.
"The people of Canada and Germany have developed a deep and lasting friendship," said Prime Minister Harper. "I look forward to welcoming Chancellor Merkel to Canada and to further strengthening the bonds between our two countries."
