PM congratulates Canadian athletes on Olympic medals
“Tonya Verbeek and the entire Canadian Women’s Soccer Team proved today that they have the talent of Olympians, and the determination of champions,” said Prime Minister Harper. “We are truly proud of their achievements on the world stage, in addition to their demonstration of dedication, resilience and spirit.”
Tonya Verbeek, of Thorold, Ontario is a three-time Olympian and this is her third Olympic medal. In 2011, Ms. Verbeek placed second at the World Championships in women’s wrestling (55 kg division), and won a silver in the same event at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara. Ms. Verbeek also captured an Olympic silver medal in the 55 kg weight class in Athens in 2004 and followed that up with a bronze medal in the same weight class at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
The Canadian Women’s Soccer Team trains out of Vancouver, British Columbia. This is their first Olympic medal and Canada’s first team medal in the Summer Olympics since the men’s basketball team won silver in 1936.
The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are being held from July 27 to August 12 in London, United Kingdom. Canada is being represented by more than 275 athletes who are competing in a 26 sport program scheduled around London. More than 10,500 athletes, coaches and team officials from at least 200 countries are participating in these Summer Olympic Games.
