"Benin is a democratic African partner that continues to make impressive progress in the areas of economic and institutional reform while promoting regional stability," said Prime Minister Harper. "I look forward to meeting with President Boni Yayi to explore ways of expanding commercial relations and contributing further to Benin's development.
During the visit, Prime Minister Harper and President Boni Yayi will discuss ways in which the two countries can further strengthen trade and investment, and increase economic growth in Africa through enhanced management of the continent's natural resources.
Elected as Chairperson of the Assembly of the African Union in January 2012, President Boni Yayi has led the response of his organization to coup d'etats in Mali and Guineau-Bissau, the ongoing crisis in northern Mali, escalating conflicts in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and most recently in the Central African Republic. He also promoted the African Union on the world stage by representing it at the G-8 Camp David Summit in May and at the G-20 Summit in Los Cabos in June.
