Prime Minister Stephen Harper announces enhanced scholarship program for the Americas

18 April 2009
PORT OF SPAIN

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today that Canada will invest in the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP).  The program will award up to 1600 scholarships for Latin American and Caribbean students to pursue studies or research in Canada.

“Investing in these scholarships will help create a new generation of leaders in the Americas with an extensive appreciation of Canada, including our values and our technologies and know how,” said the Prime Minister. “It will also help enrich institutional partnerships between Canada and other countries in the Americas.”

The Program will provide students from the Americas with an opportunity to study in Canada in fields that serve to advance the economic, social and political needs of the hemisphere.

Scholars will also have access to Canadian models and expertise in key disciplines as part of their academic programs.

ELAP is an expansion of existing scholarship programs and reflects Canada’s growing engagement in the region to enhance security, prosperity and democratic governance.

The program will be available at the vocational, undergraduate and graduate levels. The first round of scholarships will be awarded for the fall of 2009.
