PM speaks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel

14 June 2010
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper called Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, this morning to discuss Canada’s preparations for the upcoming G-8 and G-20 Summits.

On the G-8 Summit, Prime Minister Harper highlighted the government’s maternal, newborn and child health initiative and the need to make progress in reducing the numbers of preventable deaths of mothers and children in the least developed countries.  Both leaders also pledged to discuss a range of global peace and security issues, including Iran and North Korea.

On the G-20 Summit, Prime Minister Harper and Chancellor Merkel agreed with the need to make progress on the Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth, including completing the delivery of stimulus and preparing credible plans for fiscal consolidation.  Both leaders also cited the need for reforming the international financial system in order to prevent another crisis.

Prime Minister Harper also indicated to Chancellor Merkel that climate change would be discussed at both summits.

Today's call with Chancellor Merkel is part of a series of calls that Prime Minister Harper is making to G-8 and G-20 Leaders ahead of the Muskoka G-8 and Toronto G-20 Summits.
