This afternoon, Prime Minister Harper spoke by phone with the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, about preparations and priorities for the Muskoka G-8 and Toronto G-20 summits.
On G-8, the two leaders discussed development, peace and security issues while on G-20, both agreed on the importance of restoring the health of global economy by entrenching recovery and laying the foundations for sustainable and balanced growth. They additionally noted the importance of implementing clear and realistic plans for fiscal consolidation and sustainability. The Prime Minister stressed the G-20’s responsibility to deliver on commitments to address weaknesses that led to the financial crisis.
The President and Prime Minister also exchanged views on other areas where G-20 actions have been, and remain, vital, including developing global growth strategies. The two leaders agreed that Canada and the Russian Federation were like-minded in opposing the implementation of a global bank tax.
