Prime Minister Harper led off the meeting by acknowledging the importance of the Filipino-Canadian community across Canada, which is approaching half a million people. President Aquino thanked Canada and its people for openly welcoming Canadians of Filipino origin.
Prime Minister Harper raised the issue of human smuggling, talking about Canada's generous immigration system coming under attack by human smugglers seeking to abuse it. The 2 leaders discussed finding joint approaches to deal with the issue of human smuggling.
The leaders discussed the expansion of economic relations, including hopes to conclude an air agreement.
The two leaders also discussed the recent bus shooting in the Phillipines where Canadians were killed.
