Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke in depth this morning with Prime Minister François Fillon of France about the increasingly grave, chaotic situation unfolding in Libya.
The two Prime Ministers expressed their grave concern about deeply disturbing actions of the Gadaffi regime in suppressing its own citizens and discussed sanctions at the UN Security Council.
They agreed to remain in close touch and to work together in finding ways to promote peace, democracy and respect for human rights in Libya and in the region at large.
Prime Minister Harper reiterated the need for strong action and that the Libyan regime must be held accountable.
Actions such as:
- Libya’s immediate suspension from the United Nations Human Rights Council
- The referral of the situation in Libya to the International Criminal Court by the United Nations Security Council
- All options should be considered by a United Nations Security Council resolution.
