Prime Minister Stephen Harper speaks with President Barack Obama

Prime Minister Harper this afternoon spoke with President Obama about the serious situation in Libya, as well as developments in the Middle East and North African region. They discussed the need to deter violence by the Libyan regime against its own citizens, and for coordinated international action to address growing humanitarian needs in Libya and neighbouring countries, including a role for the United Nations. The two leaders also discussed the swift action by the UNSC and our respective countries to impose sanctions on the Libyan regime and to support the universal rights of the Libyan people.

They agreed to remain in close touch and cooperate in helping evacuate each other’s citizens from Libya, and in finding ways to promote peace and democracy in Libya and throughout the region.
