Conference on the Future of Libya in Paris

1 September 2011
Ottawa, Ontario
Beyond participation in the Conference on the Future of Libya in Paris, Prime Minister Harper participated in a pre-meeting with a smaller group of leaders, including the National Transitional Council, who have been principal participants of the military mission in Libya. Leaders discussed what needs to be done to complete the military mission and the way forward once the former has been achieved.

The participants were France, UK, US, Canada, Italy, Qatar, UAE, Jordan, Turkey and the NTC.

While in Paris, Prime Minister Harper also met with Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron. The two leaders reiterated their commitment to ensuring the success of the current NATO Mission and exchanged views on stabilization and reconstruction efforts, and the way forward.

They also agreed on the need to unfreeze Libyan assets in order to support the Libyan people in rebuilding their country.
