Prime Minister Stephen Harper speaks with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti

Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke this morning with Mario Monti and congratulated him on his recent appointment as Prime Minister of Italy.
The two leaders discussed the ongoing economic and financial crisis in the Eurozone and the need for concerted action on the part of Europe to address the challenges at hand.
Prime Minister Harper noted the progress being made in free trade negotiations between Canada and the European Union. He also underscored the close and long-standing relations enjoyed between Italy and Canada.
The two leaders looked forward to having an opportunity to sit down together and discuss a range of international and bilateral issues.
