25 January 2012
Davos, Switzerland
Prime Minister Harper met today with Prime Minister Thorning-Schmidt of Denmark at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This was the first meeting of the two leaders.

The Eurozone crisis was a central theme of the discussion including the impact it is having more broadly on the global economy. Prime Minister Harper reiterated his call for decisive action within Europe. They also talked about their respective economic and fiscal situations and plans.

Both prime ministers underscored the strong relationship shared between Canada and Denmark, including the close cooperation between the two countries in the Arctic and globally as members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and contributors to military efforts in Libya and Afghanistan.

Both leaders emphasized their desire to complete the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) this year. Denmark currently holds the Presidency of the European Union.

Finally, Prime Minister Harper also used the opportunity of the meeting to raise Canadian concerns with the EU's Fuel Quality Directive.  He strongly encouraged a non-discriminatory, science-based approach to implementing the directive.
