Prime Minister Harper meets with Prime Minister Mario Monti of Italy

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today met Mario Monti, Prime Minister of Italy, in Seoul at the Nuclear Security Summit. This was the first meeting of the two leaders.

The state of the global economy dominated the discussions between them. Prime Minister Harper acknowledged Prime Minister Monti's comprehensive economic reforms which are contributing to the restoration of market confidence. They discussed the economic outlook in Italy, in specific, and in Europe more broadly.

Both leaders emphasized their desire to finalize the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) this year. The CETA remains a top priority for Canada and Prime Minister Harper thanked Prime Minister Monti for Italy's longstanding support.

The prime ministers also discussed a range of international security matters and looked forward to working together at a series of upcoming summits including the G8, NATO and the G20.
