Prime Minister Stephen Harper today met with Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, on the margins of the Summit of the Americas. Prime Minister Harper highlighted the close ties between Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, and both leaders looked forward to the upcoming visit of Governor General David Johnston to Trinidad & Tobago in early May, to mark the 50
th anniversary of our vibrant bilateral relationship.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the growing trade and investment ties between Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, noting the potential for continued expansion, notably in the oil and gas sector. The Prime Minister welcomed the support of Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar for progress in the trade negotiations towards a trade agreement between Canada and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The leaders also discussed the regional security situation, and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar thanked Canada for its significant contributions in the police and justice reform sectors.
