Prime Minister Harper meets with Russian President Putin

Today in Vladivostok, on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting, Prime Minister Harper met with Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation. This was their first meeting since President Putin was inaugurated in May.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the bilateral trade and investment relationship and to working together on Arctic issues.

Prime Minister Harper also took the opportunity to congratulate President Putin on his country's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The leaders also discussed the global economy as Russia prepares to take on the G-20 Chair in 2013.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss matters of international peace and security. In this context, the Leaders had a frank exchange regarding the deteriorating situation in Syria, and its impacts on the surrounding region.
