Prime Minister Harper meets with Haitian President Martelly

27 September 2012
New York City, New York
Today in New York, Prime Minister Harper met with Michel Martelly, President of Haiti.  The leaders last met in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In their meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together in support of Haitian priorities for security, governance, rule of law, economic and sustainable development priorities.  They discussed progress made to strengthen governance and institutions in Haiti, and to lay the groundwork for long-term economic stability.  The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the upcoming Francophonie Summit, which will take place October 12-14 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Canada remains the second largest donor in Haiti, with over $1 billion in assistance since 2006. Canadian assistance is showing concrete results, including daily hot meals for 400,000 schoolchildren; increased immunization coverage rates for measles and rubella; and the registration of 4.8 million Haitian citizens in the National Civil Registry, giving them access to employment, banking, government services, and voting.   The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie) recently led a successful trade mission to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
