Prime Minister Stephen Harper meets President of Benin and Chairperson of the African Union

13 October 2012
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
The Prime Minister met today with the President of Benin Boni Yayi just prior to the Opening Ceremony of the 14th  Summit of La Francophonie in Kinshasa. President Boni Yayi is the current Chairperson of the African Union (AU).

The Leaders discussed key issues at the Francophonie Summit, including peace and security issues in Africa, particularly the situation in Mali and the Sahel. Both took note of yesterday's important United Nations Security Council Resolution on Mali and briefly discussed the role of the AU in supporting Mali and the Economic Community of West African States as they plan for next steps in dealing with the situation in northern Mali.

The two leaders had met in May on the margins of the G-8 Summit at Camp David.
