The two leaders underlined the importance of the Canada-Korea relationship, and highlighted the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations that will be celebrated throughout 2013. The year 2013 will also mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, during which 516 Canadians lost their lives.
The two leaders also discussed trade, investment and energy issues, highlighting the importance of concluding a Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement.
This is the first visit of Prime Minister Kim to Canada. Prime Minister Harper has travelled to South Korea three times since 2006, including for an official visit in December 2009, the G-20 Summit in November 2010, and the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit in March 2012.
