Prime Minister Stephen Harper attends the opening of the Quebec Winter Carnaval

26 January 2007
Québec
PLEASE CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Minister Verner,
Minister Després,
Mayor Boucher,

Dear friends from Quebec City,

I know my Canadian history well enough to know that the Quebec Winter Carnival is not a good venue to make long political speeches.  Plus, it's cold!

But I wanted to come here with my family, as Prime Minister of Canada, to pay tribute to such a special tradition.

Because for 113 years now, Quebecers from throughout the province and around the region have "partied hearty" to celebrate the joys of winter – and Quebecers invite the whole world to the Quebec Winter Carnival to share this celebration of solidarity and pride.

On behalf of Canada's New Government and on behalf of my family, I want to wish you all a wonderful Winter Carnival.

Thank you, and until next time.
