Good evening.
Thank you Gerry for that kind introduction and thank you for inviting me to kick off this 20th edition of the Arctic Winter Games.
I’d like to welcome all the athletes, coaches, performers and spectators who are participating in tonight’s celebration and the Games to come. It’s great to meet so many fellow Northerners from across the circumpolar region. I know that connections and friendships will be made here that will last lifetimes.
In 1970, Yellowknife was proud to host the very first Arctic Winter Games.
The games were designed to showcase and celebrate the very best in Arctic sportsmanship and culture.
Thirty-eight years later the Games – and the athletes and performers who participate in them – are stronger and better than ever.
Our Government supports the Games because we are committed to the social and economic development of the North.
This year’s theme, "Northern Stars-Inspired by Dreams", speaks to the limitless potential of the North and the promise of a bright future.
To the participants and organizers I say:
You are the brightest stars in the Northern sky!
Thank-you and Good luck!
