Boosting Tourism in New Brunswick: PM Announces Fundy Trail Parkway Extension

CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.

Thank you for that warm welcome.

Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, it's always a pleasure for me to come back to New Brunswick, and in particular to this area as you know where the Harper family very much has its roots where I spent many summers as a boy.

Coming back always brings back more memories even on a cool day like this.

Last week, leaders of the G-20 countries met in London to discuss the progress made since our last meeting in November on combating the global recession, as well as to map out the next steps of the international response.

I laid out the measures Canada has taken to provide stimulus and to sustain economic activity during this global recession.

In particular, I highlighted the national Economic Action Plan laid out in January’s Budget.

Significantly large than the two per cent of GDP proposed by the International Monetary Fund, our plan focuses on moving forward long-term investments in order to generate economic activity across the country in the construction season that is now arriving.

From Vancouver to Lévis to the Annapolis Valley, this Action Plan will put is Canadians to work building the infrastructure needed to achieve greater prosperity when the recovery takes hold, as it inevitably will.

Today I’m pleased to announce a major project here in New Brunswick.

In partnership with Premier Graham and the Government of New Brunswick, our Government will accelerate work on extending the province’s most spectacular scenic drive, the Fundy Trail Parkway.

Home to the highest tides on earth, the Bay of Fundy is one of the marine wonders of the world.

From sightings of Finbacks and Humpbacks, to treks through old-growth forests, to low-tide walks on the ocean floor, the region offers a tourism experience unlike any other.

The new link we are building between Route 111 and Route 114 will create well-paying construction jobs, improve the flow of traffic in southern New Brunswick, and, of course, boost tourism in the region.

This action builds on our Government’s past support for the Parkway including the construction of critical sections near the entrance of Fundy National Park.

I’d like to thank Premier Graham for his vital role in making today’s announcement a reality.

This initiative is yet another example of what can be achieved when governments work together.

The Premier will share further details with you in a moment, but I again want to make it clear that this announcement isn’t simply about highway construction, or tourism development, or the jobs they will create, it is more fundamentally about where we’re heading as a country.

As the world struggles with the effects of the global recession, we as Canadians are looking ahead and using our strong balance sheets to prepare our economy for the opportunities and better times that lie ahead.

While the challenges Canada faces may be great, our resolve to move forward is greater.

By looking forward today and investing in key infrastructure, our Government, in concert with government at all levels, is seizing the opportunities that will help us get through tough times, and ensure this country emerges stronger than ever.

Thank you.

I’d now like to invite Premier Graham to the podium.
