Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the opening of the first Winter Youth Olympics

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the inaugural Winter Youth Olympics, taking place in Innsbruck, Austria, from January 13-22, 2012:

“On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to wish our athletes participating in the first ever Winter Youth Olympics in Austria the best of luck in their respective events. 

“The 51 Canadian athletes attending the games will showcase their skills and talents to the world. Their hard work and determination has paid off and their participation in the first Winter Youth Olympics is a special milestone that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

“Recognizing the benefits of physical activity, our Government will continue to support sports participation at all levels to help foster healthy and active lifestyles.

“Again, I wish all our athletes the best of luck as they compete for the podium and proudly represent our country on the international stage.”
