Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the centennial of the Calgary Stampede

6 July 2012
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede:

“This year, The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth celebrates 100 years of commemorating Calgary’s ranching, agricultural and aboriginal heritage. It is a truly historic milestone and cause for great celebration.

“Visited by millions of people every year, the Stampede has helped put Calgary – a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2012 – on the world map. With the theme ‘We’re Greatest Together,’ this year’s celebration will once again showcase Alberta to the world, and provide attendees with an experience of a lifetime.

“In support of this special anniversary, our Government has invested $5 million to the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) for the promotion of the Calgary Stampede in key tourism markets. In fact, Harry the Horse, the Stampede’s Centennial mascot, received a warm welcome when he joined me in Beijing, China, last February for the official launch of the CTC’s new 2012 tourism marketing campaign.

“I would like to thank all those involved in making the Stampede a success every year, and encourage everyone to take part in celebrating its 100th anniversary.”
