Support to the Republic of Benin for improved public administration
To this end, on January 8, 2013, Prime Minister Harper announced support of $18.25 million over eight years (2013-2021) to the Support for the Increase of Internal Revenues in Benin project through the Canadian International Development Agency's Geographic Programs Branch - Benin Country program. This initiative will help Benin modernize its public administration which will help achieve more effective collection and management of corporate and personal income taxes in the country. A Request for Proposal will be launched in the coming months to select the project's implementing partner. Once the selection has been approved, implementation will begin.
With the use of Canadian technical expertise - which will be given from specialists on both a short- and long-term basis - this project will help support Benin's Directorate General of Taxation and Lands to effectively collect and manage corporate and personal income taxes, specifically it will help:
- Improve the collection of internal taxes;
- Improve policy implementation; and,
- Improve policy development through new information systems.
Through increased tax revenues, the Government of Benin will be able to improve its social programs, resulting in better economic conditions for poor and vulnerable populations, such as women and youth, and an overall improved environment for economic growth.
The goal of Canada's programming in Benin is to help the country stimulate economic growth by supporting the development of a business-friendly market and the development of micro, small, and medium-sized businesses. This programming supports Canada's comprehensive engagement in Africa in the goal of reducing poverty and ensuring greater sustainability and stability.
