The Evergreen Line rapid transit system

VANCOUVER

The Evergreen Line is a rapid transit rail line that will be built in Metro Vancouver. It will extend 11 kilometres from the existing Millennium SkyTrain Line at the Lougheed Town Centre station in Burnaby to the Coquitlam Town Centre, through the community of Port Moody.

The system would feature elevated, at-grade and tunneled guideways. The new line will employ the same Advanced Light Rapid Transit technology used by the current SkyTrain system.

The total cost of the Evergreen Line project is projected to be $1.4 billion. Construction is expected to start at the end of 2010 and be completed in 2014.

British Columbia was allotted $66.7 million by the federal government under the Public Transit Capital Trust 2008, which was announced in Budget 2008. On March 11, 2008, Prime Minister Harper and Premier Campbell confirmed that British Columbia would direct its entire Trust fund allocation to the Evergreen Line.

The Evergreen Line has been identified as a Building Canada Fund priority by the Canada-British Columbia Building Canada Plan Infrastructure Framework Committee.

Today’s announcement to set aside up to $350 million in additional funding, under the Building Canada Fund, would bring the total federal contribution up to $416.7 million.

The Province has committed $410 million to the project, and The South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (TransLink) has committed $400 million. Construction is expected to start in 2010 and be completed in 2014. The remaining $173 million will be funded by project partners, including a possible Public-Private Partnership and potentially through transit-oriented land development.
