PM Announces Major Upgrade to Blue Water Bridge

The Harper Government is investing in upgrading one of Canada’s most heavily used cross-border bridge crossings through a major improvement project at Sarnia’s Blue Water Bridge, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today.

"Blue Water Bridge is a crucial link in trade between Canada and the United States.  This cross-border traffic is vital to our export industries – and more important than ever, given the current global economic downturn," said the Prime Minister.  "This project will reduce border congestion, improve trade, and create local jobs."

Bridge improvement plans include the construction of additional lanes on the approach to the plaza, a truck return road to the United States, new Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) inspection booths, additional signage and improved lighting/electrical systems.

Blue Water Bridge is Canada’s second busiest international commercial crossing.  When completed, bridge upgrades will reduce traffic congestion, facilitate local border crossing and complement recent and planned investments by the United States for its side of the border crossing.

The Blue Water Bridge construction project will help create hundreds of employment opportunities for the people living in the region.  As a result of this investment, the project is expected to be complete by December 2010 – two years ahead of schedule.  Work on this shovel-ready project is expected to begin by May 2009.

The Blue Water Bridge project is one of many job-creating investments contained within the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
