Funding to create jobs, boost economy

20 August 2009
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
Prime Minister Stephen Harper, joined by the Honourable Floyd Roland, Premier of the Northwest Territories, today announced major road reconstruction and rehabilitation projects throughout the Northwest Territories.

"Our government’s number one priority is to stimulate our economy and create jobs," said the Prime Minister. "Working together, we can ensure that families and businesses throughout the territory can count on safer and more reliable roads and help the economy to thrive now and in the future."

Construction projects on the Dempster Highway, Ingraham Trail Highway 4, Mackenzie Highway, Liard Highway 7, and Highway 6 will bring job creation and enhance infrastructure across the territory.

The projects announced today are funded from the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund.  The Government of Canada is contributing towards $70 million for eligible roadway infrastructure initiatives that were approved in the Northwest Territories Annual Capital Plan.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating the remaining provincial/territorial base funding for infrastructure. To learn more about Canada’s Economic Action Plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.
