Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada

30 October 2009
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of a Canadian soldier in Afghanistan:

“It is with deep sorrow that I extend my sympathies to the family and friends of Sapper Steven Marshall.  All Canadians feel this loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to you at this difficult time.

“Sapper Marshall, a professional soldier and a dedicated Canadian, has made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.

“Canadians are proud of the brave men and women of our armed forces, grateful to their supportive families and thankful for all those who choose to serve in this vital mission.  The Government of Canada continues to work with its allies towards returning safety and stability to the people of Afghanistan.  Progress has been made, but much hard work remains to be done.

“Canadians are proud of our soldiers and are eternally indebted for their efforts in Afghanistan.  Sapper Marshall and his sacrifice will always be remembered. ”
