PM welcomes Fourth Report of Advisory Committee on the Public Service

25 February 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today welcomed the Fourth Report of the Advisory Committee on the Public Service, entitled A Relevant and Connected Public Service.  In their annual report, the committee makes recommendations on the future development of the Public Service of Canada.

“An effective and accountable Public Service is essential to the delivery of Government priorities,” said the Prime Minister.  “I am proud the committee recognized the Government’s remarkable efforts over the past year on the Economic Action Plan, H1N1-preparedness and Haiti.  I also thank them for their thoughts on what the Public Service can do to help Canadians succeed in today’s complex global environment.”

In their report, the Advisory Committee recommended ways to promote stronger leadership in the Public Service, stronger connectivity to Canadians and the development of new and more effective business models.  They also applauded steps taken by the Government of Canada to reduce red tape and improve its pay system.

Co-chaired by the Honourable Paul M. Tellier and the Honourable David Emerson, the Advisory Committee on the Public Service was created in the fall of 2006 to advise the Prime Minister and the Clerk of the Privy Council on the renewal and future development of the Public Service.

The Advisory Committee on the Public Service is composed of nine eminent Canadians.  For its next report, the committee will continue to track progress on the reduction of red tape and will maintain its focus on human resources governance and talent management for senior leaders.  The committee will also examine the overall strength of the Public Service workforce and will explore tools and technology that support innovation.

The report is available online on the Privy Council Office website: http://www.pco-bcp.gc.ca
