Deepening Sydney Harbour

10 December 2010
Sydney, Nova Scotia
The Harper Government is committed to providing the infrastructure that Canadian communities and regions need to prosper and grow. Through the Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), the Harper Government is committing approximately $19 million over the next three months to deepen Sydney Harbour.  ECBC is a federal Crown corporation created to promote and assist the financing and development of Cape Breton Island and the Mulgrave area.

The Province of Nova Scotia and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality are also supporting the project, providing $15.2 million and $2 million respectively.  Nova Scotia Power will provide an additional $1 million.

It is estimated the deepening of the harbour will:

• Generate thousands of new jobs over the short- and long-term.
• Diversify and broaden port-related business, particularly in the areas of bulk cargo transportation, the import and export of coal, off-shore supply and servicing, and ship building and maintenance supply.

The Harper Government’s improvements will enhance the competitiveness of Cape Breton businesses and strengthen their position within the global economy.
