The Prime Minister welcomed the Secretary General to Canada for the first Forum mondial de la langue française and the Rencontre économique de la Francophonie internationale (RIFÉ). Both events will enable la Francophonie to affirm and increase its importance on the international scene in many sectors, including the economy.
In their meeting, the Leaders discussed a range of topics including Canada's continuing role in la Francophonie and the state of preparations for the 14th Francophonie Summit which will be held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, later this year.
The Prime Minister, accompanied in the meeting by The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State (La Francophonie), underscored the importance of the minister's recent visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo where progress on human rights, democracy and governance were a central focus. The Prime Minister indicated that the Summit would be an important occasion to further strengthen the values advocated by the members of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
