The point of no return was reached 20 years ago today, on November 9, 1989. That is when, with the world watching, thousands of Germans from the east poured across a border that would soon cease to exist.

We know in our hearts that we owe our freedom, democracy and prosperity to the millions of Canadians who have kept our True North strong and free for over two centuries.

Since becoming Prime Minister, I have visited this magnificent part of our country many times. But I never cease to be astounded by the rugged natural beauty of a land that has been said to “demand the spirit of heroes.”

On behalf of all Canadians, I welcome Their Royal Highnesses to Canada for what I hope will be a memorable tour of our great country.

Let us never forget these brave men and women whose sacrifice served to make life better for others.

Our Canadian Francophonie enriches the nation, inspiring communities throughout the country, and unites us with many other countries through a common language. For Canadians, it is a source of great pride.

This run is a chance for Canadians from all every part of our great nation to share in the excitement as we count down to Opening Day. Already, you can feel the energy in the air.

Ladies and gentlemen, as Prime Minister, it is an honour, indeed a great pleasure, to be here today in Victoria, as we celebrate the arrival of Canada’s Olympic Flame.

Through initiatives like the Registered Disability Savings Plan, our government is helping Canadians with disabilities make even greater contributions to our country.

By investing in post-secondary institutions throughout the province, our government is taking concrete action to build Canada’s research and innovation capacity.

I am pleased that, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, we will ensure that the library can meet the needs of future generations while providing new jobs and stimulus to Toronto today.

It was with great pride that I named Mr. Creighton as a Canadian of National Historic Significance last year and I am delighted to be here today.

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Conservative government is investing in clean energy projects that are creating high-quality jobs for Canadians now, helping our environment and preparing the economy for the future.

The South Shore Trade Area is essential to the trade that flows between Western Canada and our Pacific trading partners.
