Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement congratulating Canadian athletes on their performance at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico:

“Once again, Canadian athletes have succeeded brilliantly in international competition, winning 30 gold, 40 silver, and 49 bronze, and placing 5th in the medal count at the Pan American Games.

“All Canadians are extremely proud of our athletes and their outstanding performances.

“Their remarkable and unwavering dedication to their sport and their country is an inspiration to all and a testament to the values and spirit that make our country great.

“I wish Canada’s athletes all the best as they look to build upon these successes at future sporting events, including the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England and the 2015 Pan American Games being hosted in Toronto.

“Recognizing the importance of sport and physical activity for the health of Canadians, our Government will continue to support sporting excellence in Canada from the playground to the podium.”
