Prime Minister Harper calls President Aquino of the Philippines to express condolences and offer support in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda)

Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke this morning with Benigno Aquino III, President of the Philippines, in the wake of the disaster caused by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).  

On behalf of all Canadians, the Prime Minister offered his heartfelt condolences to the people of the Philippines.  He said that the thoughts and prayers of all Canadians are with those affected by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).

Prime Minister Harper indicated that Canada stands ready to help and support the Philippines in responding to this disaster.  In this regard, he noted the contributions of Canadian assistance in support of humanitarian organizations that have been made to date and added that the government is calling on Canadians to help support the relief effort through a matching fund.  The Prime Minister also noted the deployment of the Interdepartmental Strategic Support Team to assess needs on the ground and identify potential response options.  President Aquino expressed his sincere thanks to Canada.
