The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the occasion of Puthandu:
“Today is New Year’s Day in the Tamil calendar, a day that will be celebrated in Canada and around the world.
“Puthandu, also known as Varusha Pirappu, is a time for family and friends to feast, to exchange gifts, and to pray for blessings for the year to come at temples and churches.
“As Tamils welcome the New Year, we are reminded of the many positive contributions that this community makes to our country. Canada is strong because of the many diverse and vibrant cultures that come together to form the base of its identity.
“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I wish all Tamils who celebrate Puthandu a happy and prosperous New Year.
“Iniya Tamizh Puthaandu Nalvazhtukkal.”
