Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the closing of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the closing of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:

“As the Paralympic Games draw to a close, I invite all Canadians to reflect on the incredible performances of our athletes over the last eleven days.

“We watched from coast to coast to coast with excitement as they competed against the best in the world. Our Paralympians have reminded us of what can be accomplished with hard work, relentless passion, and the tremendous support of coaches, families, friends, and communities.

“These athletes showed Canada and the world their determination, spirit, and sportsmanship. They have inspired all Canadians, including young people living with disabilities.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my thanks to all Paralympians and to the people of Brazil on making these such memorable Games. I also encourage all Canadians to provide our returning athletes with the warmest of welcomes home and to celebrate what they have accomplished during the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.”
