Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the result of South Korea’s presidential election

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the result of the Republic of Korea’s presidential election:  

“On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to congratulate Mr. Moon Jae-in on his election as the next President of the Republic of Korea.

“Canada and the Republic of Korea enjoy a close relationship, based on our strategic partnership, a modern free-trade agreement and common values. We look forward to expanding cooperation based on our recently signed Canada-Korea Science, Technology and Innovation Agreement. Canada also collaborates with the Republic of Korea on important international issues as strong partners in the G20, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

“I look forward to working with President Moon to deepen relations between our two countries.

“Canada remains steadfast in its support of the Republic of Korea and will continue to work with our international partners to enhance peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region, including on the Korean Peninsula.”
