The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the terrorist attack in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso:

“I am deeply saddened that 18 people, including Canadians Tammy Chen and Bilel Diffalah, were killed during a terrorist attack on a popular restaurant in downtown Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Those lost include women and children, and people of many nationalities and backgrounds, who should have felt safe gathering together to share a meal.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I offer our condolences to the families and friends of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured.

“Canada strongly condemns this heinous attack. People should not have to live in fear over their safety and security – no matter where they call home or where they travel. We will continue to work closely with the international community to fight terrorism and bring those responsible to justice.

“These cowardly acts seek to instill fear and divide us. In the face of hatred, we must stand united in the values of diversity, openness, and inclusion.”
