Mr. David McGuinty has earned a number of degrees, including: a Diploma in Agriculture from the Kemptville College of Agriculture in Ontario, a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at the University of Ottawa, specialized diplomas in Civil and Comparative Law at the Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec, a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Ottawa, and a Master of Laws at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Mr. McGuinty has served with the United Nations in West Africa, practiced international law in London, worked with the International Development Law Organization in Rome, and served as the President and CEO of Canada’s National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.

A lawyer by profession, Mr. McGuinty is also a Harvard-trained mediator and negotiator, and received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for his contributions to his community and to Canada.

Since first being elected in 2004, Mr. McGuinty has gained extensive experience as a Member of Parliament having served as Official Opposition House Leader, Vice-Chair of several House of Commons Standing Committees, and Critic for: Science and Technology; Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario; Federal Economic Development Initiative in Northern Ontario; Transport, Infrastructure and Communities; and, Energy and the Environment.

Mr. McGuinty was re-elected in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015.

Born and raised in his riding of Ottawa South, Mr. McGuinty and his brother Dalton, a former Premier of Ontario, became the first siblings in Canadian history to hold elected office both provincially and federally in the same riding at the same time.
