The Honourable Faye E. McWatt

The Honourable Faye E. McWatt was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and immigrated to Canada in 1962.

Justice McWatt received her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Ottawa in 1984 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1986. Practising criminal law as a Crown attorney for the Province of Ontario, then as a criminal defence lawyer, she rarely spent a day out of the courtroom. In 1995, she was appointed as an agent for the federal Department of Justice and began prosecuting federal narcotics offences.

Justice McWatt acted as counsel before various commissions of inquiry, including the Commission of Inquiry Into the Deployment of Canadian Forces to Somalia. She was a member of the Criminal Lawyers' Association and the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers.

In 2000, Justice McWatt was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, where she has presided over criminal, family, and civil law cases.
