Prime Minister welcomes appointment of new Information Commissioner

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today welcomed the appointment of Caroline Maynard as the new Information Commissioner.

This appointment, which was recently approved by the House of Commons and the Senate, is effective March 1, 2018.

The Office of the Information Commissioner was established in 1983 under the Access to Information Act, Canada’s freedom of information legislation. The Information Commissioner is an independent agent of Parliament appointed by both Houses of Parliament for a term of seven years.

Caroline Maynard was chosen as the nominee for the position of Information Commissioner through the Government’s open, transparent, and merit-based appointment process.
