Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met yesterday with the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, following the G7 Summit in Charlevoix.
The two leaders emphasized the urgency of global action for the protection and health of the oceans. Both looked forward to co-hosting a major conference on the Blue Economy, in Nairobi in November, and both reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that the needs of coastal nations remain a central part of the oceans agenda.
The Prime Minister and the President also discussed their shared commitment to women's empowerment and gender equality. They reaffirmed both the central role of women's empowerment in effective development assistance, and the importance of mobilizing African voices on gender equality.
The Prime Minister acknowledged Kenya's historic generosity in hosting large numbers of refugees. He and the President discussed possible collaboration to promote the economic empowerment of refugees.
The two leaders looked forward to further deepening bilateral relations, including in trade and investment. They discussed global security issues and noted the potential that exists for still-closer security cooperation and partnership in addressing violent extremism.
